Deli in my Belly
My Experience at Traditions Eatery in Lawrence NY
Tonight my friend and I, dined at the local kosher deli. Ordered the hot dog as an App.It was boiled, a big no no especially at a deli. A hot dog, should come off the grill, not from a pot of water. ON top of that, the sauerkraut was disgustingly soft and mushy, it tasted as if it came out of a can. A kosher hot dog is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. Traditions missed the bell on that one. I will definitely not be ordering one here again. Now on to the main course, I ordered a grilled pastrami and breaded chicken sandwich with fried onion, lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing. They call this, the Edgar. How the name ties into the sandwich I have no idea. For something with such a boring name it was delicious and created a flavor explosion in my mouth. The pastrami was lean and is easy to chew. The helping was quite small though, only a couple of slices of pastrami. The chicken is very lightly breaded, very tender and juicy. This came with french fries as well. Here you get a choice of sweet potato, regular or spicy. A nice touch because most places charge more for sweet potato fries. I however, choose the spicy and what a mistake that was. The spicy fries look to the naked eye to have flavor, but they taste like regular plain fries. They were cold and tasted like they had been in the fryer too long.
My friend ordered a hot open brisket, with mashed potatoes. Half the plate was filled with mashed, while the other half had some brisket and one slice of bread. The brisket is tasty, but a little on the dry side which is of course why they gave him gravy. The mashed were tasty, but clearly not fresh and the constancy felt like came out of the box.
Being the only kosher deli in the area, this place has you where it wants you. The food was overall average, although the Edgar sandwich was good, the rest was nothing to yap about. The prices here are high for the most part, although you can find a few reasonable items. My sandwich was only $14.00 which I think was good for what I got. My friend however, with the hot open brisket definitely a big rip off at 19.00 for a little bit of meat and out of the box mashed potatoes.. You are better off just getting a brisket sandwich. It will be cheaper, and you will get more meat as well. If you are craving deli though, this is NOT the place to fulfill your craving.
